Teaching

My teaching encompasses various courses in the master’s programs in Biology, Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation, and Engineering Ecology at the Technical University of Munich,as well as guest lectures for various instututions and universities.

My teaching encompasses various courses in the master’s programs in biology, landscape planning and nature conservation, and engineering ecology. Almost all courses are closely linked to my research work and address current topics from my field of research.

COURSES

Here you will find an overview of my course program. For the current course offerings and registration as a student, please consult TUM Online.

Vegetation der Erde (Global Vegetation)
Lecture. Overview over the global vegetation, underlying climate and soil conditions, governing processes and adaptations. Distribution, structure, and ecology of the Earth’s vegetation (polar and subpolar zones, boreal zone, cool temperate zone (humid and dry mid-latitudes), seasonally humid and permanently humid subtropics, seasonally humid and permanently humid tropics, tropical-subtropical dry areas, high mountains, coastal ecosystems, wetlands) and their dependence on human influences (land use systems).

Ökologischer Feldkurs für Fortgeschrittene (Advanced Ecological Field Course)
A seven-day fieldcourse at the Tagliamento River, a still largely unimpaired Alpine River in Friuli, Italy. During the excursion, we visit various sites from the source of the river at the Passo Mauria to the delta at Bibione. The learning content covers ecosystem processes of Alpine rivers, spatio-temporal habitat dynamics, hydrodynamics and vegetation, effects of habitat and bedload dynamics on animal and plant populations, intact and degraded reference systems, execises application of current state field methods

Ökosystem Management und angewandte Renaturierungsökologie (Ecosystem Management and Applied Restoration Ecology)
This advanced seminar focuses on current ecological issues in restoration ecology and ecosystem management for specific ecosystems and habitats in a global context. It covers fundamental ecological relationships, processes, and dynamics of the respective systems, abiotic, biotic, and anthropogenic influencing factors, as well as approaches and measures for protection and renaturation. All topics are generally closely related to the chair’s current research work. The aim is to summarize and discuss the topic in the form of a review.

Vegetation und Standort (Vegetation and Site Conditions)
This fieldcourse introduces students to vegetation survey methods, the role of abiotic site factors, and the relationships between site conditions and vegetation. In addition to traditional vegetation surveys, citizen science methods and drones are also used. Data analysis involves indicator value analysis, diversity indices, and ordination methods (R statistics program).

Einführung in die Ökologische Modellierung
This is a joint course with Anja Rammig, Werner Rammer and Andy Krause. The students lern how ecological simulations help to better understand ecological relationships and how ecosystems (or parts thereof) function. In this module, students develop in-depth knowledge of ecological modeling. They analyze and structure selected simple ecosystem processes, create a conceptual model for them, and implement this model.

Various Excursions
Several one-day excursions in my field of research as a supplement to courses given by other colleagues at TUM and other Universities (Advanced Restoration Ecology, Sandra Rojas-Botero;…). Excursion destinations are e.g. the Friedergries, the Upper Isar, Tyrolean Lech, the Lech south of Augsburg, the Ammer and various sites in the larger Tagliamento catchment

Projektarbeiten (Projects)
Projects are an integral part of the master programs Lanscape Planning and Nature Conservation, Engeneering Ecology and Biology. The projects I offer are integrated in my current research work and comprise field work in population ecology, geomorphology, hydrology, the application of state of the art methods in river ecology (including UAV) and python programming, statistical analysis (traditional, habitat suitability modeling, deep learning/computer vision …) with GIS and R.

Theses
Like the projects offered by me, all theses are integrated into my current science. Possible topics can be discussed on request.
